Just like this one. It feels over the top and not at all cool, in a way that the outgoing model just barely wasn’t. Like a Hummer or a 300C with too much aftermarket chrome. It feels like it’s trying too hard to be the smug, cool rich boy’s toy it’s supposed to be.

It’s my opinion that this is largely a shit design. It’s severely compromised in a way that works for an off-road vehicle, and it’s not an off-road vehicle. S o maybe we can hope that this generation kills it? But, it’s an expensive, show-offy, fast Merc so...there’s always a market for that.

As far as I’ve heard they are actually pretty great off road, of course no one really knows yet because no one has had the money or beans to try and Mercedes certainly isn’t to to lend one to someone who will. We’ll just have to wait and see when their 2nd and 3rd owners get hold of them.

As for the rest. yes. But then again I’ve always thought that about the outgoing 463

Can they be though? I’m sure they can find traction, but the ride height is compromising.

I t’ s actually better in most numbers over the old one. I’d bet it even isn’t any worse for flex, given that the old one was pretty poor

Ground clearance between axles: 9.5” (+ 6 mm)

Maximum fording depth when driving through water and mud: 27.6” (+ 3.9”)

Breakover angle: 26° (+ 1°)

Angle of departure: 30° (+ 1°)

Angle of approach: 31° (+ 1°)

Break-over angle: 26°(+ 1°)

theyre better than the old ones off road with more ground clearance and a quicker time down their Austrian mountain testing ground than the older model by a good bit. Not only that but it’s gone from one of the worst driving cars on the road in terms of handling feel to being quicker and better feeling than most new sedans coming out. I’ve driven a bunch of old ones from the g65 on down and I’ve driven a new g550 and it blew me away with how fun it was to drive. I don’t like the exterior design as much but everywhere else it’s awesome. I usually try not to root for unique interesting vehicles to get killed off, that unique shit is the best

That’s interesting. What I said was based on what I knew of the old model, I figured that if a modern Merc could be that bad, the new one wouldn’t be leaps and bounds ahead. But I guess it’s good to hear I’m wrong.

I’m generally for weird cars too. But I’m talking Toyota Sera or Nissan Cube weird, not rich kid wank weird.

The only thing I really don’t like about it is how the headlights are not set as deep in the housing and look to be angled slightly outward, giving it somewhat of a googly-eyed appearance. And how the lower outside corner of the headlight surround seems.. soft, like it’s about to melt away into the surrounding bodywork. V ersus the much more squared-up look of the previous generation:

I do really appreciate how they otherwise kept the rest of the exterior design more or less the same (because it’s a classic and I love it). The new one is supposed to have significantly improved on-road manners, which is where >99% of these will spend most of their time anyway.

Eh I’ll take biturbo v8 jeeps with diamond pleated interior over whatever the fuck the cube is all day. I’d never ever be spending my 150k on a new g wagon or any new car at all but I still think they’re sweet, and once you drive em you realize why people love them. If I could I’d have an old body g550 for snow days and bad weather cause the clownshoe can be fun but sometimes you just want a fortress with a v8
